10 mistakes that destroy your goalkeeper gloves
Each of these mistakes takes weeks of life off your glove. Most goalkeepers commit three or four without knowing.
Gloves do not die from old age. They die from misuse. This is the list of mistakes we see repeated again and again. If you recognize yourself in any, no problem. Just fix it and your next pair will last much longer.
1. Washing them in the washing machine
Mistake number one. The washing machine punishes the latex with hot water, violent agitation and aggressive chemicals. In a single wash it destroys what costs months of normal use.
Solution. Hand wash, warm water, neutral soap. Ten minutes done well.
2. Drying in the sun or with heat
The sun dries the latex from outside and leaves it brittle. The dryer does the same in turbo version. The winter radiator, same.
Solution. Shade, natural ventilation, patience.
3. Leaving them in the car in the sun
A couple of hours in the car with the sun beating is enough to ruin a high-tier glove. Interior temperature can pass 60 degrees in summer and that degrades the latex with each exposure.
Solution. Take the gloves out of the car whenever you park in the sun, especially in tropical climates.
4. Storing them without washing
Sweat, mud and bacteria continue acting inside the bag. The smell is the first warning. Latex degradation is the silent consequence.
Solution. Full wash after every match. Minimum rinse after every training.
5. Storing them completely dry
Sounds counterintuitive. But completely dry latex turns stiff. When you go to use them, the first minutes you lose elasticity and grip.
Solution. Store the gloves with a touch of residual moisture. Cool to the touch, not soaked.
6. Rubbing the palm with brush or abrasive sponge
Clean latex grips. Scratched latex stops being latex.
Solution. Rub only with your fingertips. Gently. In warm water.
7. Using the same pair for everything
Your match glove and your training glove should not be the same. If they are, both wear out faster and your match performance drops.
Solution. Two pairs. One lower tier for training, one higher tier for competition. The initial investment pays off in double the lifespan.
8. Not hydrating the palm before playing on turf
We have repeated this three times already in this blog. If you do not do it, you take wear twice as fast.
Solution. Small bottle in the bag, spray the palm before warm-up.
9. Throwing the glove on the ground during the match
If you take the glove off to talk, drink or adjust it, do not throw it on the bench floor. Dirt and dust embed in the latex.
Solution. Leave it on your bag or attached to your belt. Treat your gear the way you would treat the tool of your trade.
10. Buying high tier without knowing how to care for it
If you are going to invest in a Prime Pro pair but are not willing to wash it correctly and hydrate it on turf, you are throwing money. Better a well-cared Control Pro than a mistreated Prime Pro.
Solution. Learn the basics before stepping up tier. The investment pays much more when care is up to standard.
Recap
Gloves that last are not the most expensive ones, they are the best cared for. Apply these ten points and your next pair will give you two or three times what you have been getting until now.
