Spines, also called fingersave from their original English name, are rigid or semi-rigid inserts inside the glove fingers that limit hyperextension. That is, they prevent your finger from bending backward beyond its natural range when it takes a hard ball strike. Sounds great. But like everything in goalkeeping, they have an upside and a downside.

What spines do exactly

Imagine you take a shot to the open hand. The ball impacts the fingertip and pushes backward. Without a spine, the finger flexes backward to the limit of the joint. With a spine, the flexion stops before reaching the limit.

Result. Fewer sprains, fewer dislocations, fewer trips to the physio. Especially useful for goalkeepers who already had an injury and want to prevent recurrence.

Pros: why yes

Cons: why sometimes no

• Reduces sensitivity. The stiffness in the finger limits the feedback you get from the ball.

• Adds weight. Spines weigh, even though modern ones have lowered the bar.

• Changes the natural flex of the finger. Some goalkeepers feel it gets in the way when punching.

• Can create pressure points if the size is not exact.

Fixed vs removable spines

There are two systems on the market.

Fixed spines. Sewn into the glove, cannot be removed. More stable, perfect fit, maximum protection. Drawback: you lose flexibility of use. If you want to play without protection one day, you cannot.

Removable spines. Pulled in and out through an entry on the glove. Much more flexibility. You can play protected in matches and without spines in training. Drawback: the internal fit can feel slightly looser.
