Futsal goalkeeper vs football goalkeeper. Differences and gear

The futsal goalkeeper is not a small football goalkeeper. It is a different position, with its own technique and its own gear.

If you play or have played both, you already know. The futsal goalkeeper lives a completely different match from their football counterpart. Faster, closer to distribution with feet, with shots at short distance and reflexes tested every second. This guide compares the two positions and recommends the right Elite Sport gear for futsal.

Main technical differences

Shot distance. In futsal you receive shots from 6 meters. In football, rarely from less than 12. Your reflexes have less time. Your positioning must be more advanced and committed.

Constant distribution with feet. The futsal goalkeeper actively participates in building the play. Receives back passes every minute and has to distribute short and fast. Passing technique becomes essential.

Frequent coming-outs. The futsal goalkeeper leaves the box (when they can grab the ball with their hand inside the small box, of course) more times than the football one. The opponent's pressure pushes the goalkeeper to be a permanent sixth player.

The fifth missing. In futsal, in late moments with score deficit, the team can take out the goalkeeper and put a field player in (goalkeeper-player). Your job changes. If you play goalkeeper-player, your field technique matters as much as your goalkeeping.

Differences in training

Reflexes. In futsal they are your daily bread. Work with faster balls, short distance throws, double stimulus.

Foot reaction speed. You are a defensive midfielder. Work first touch, oriented control, one and two touch passing.

Anaerobic endurance. The match is rounds of pure explosiveness, not continuous running. Work short and intense series, sprints, pace changes.

Upper body and hand strength. Short distance shots arrive with power. Your hands have to handle the impact.

General futsal gear

Footwear. Completely flat sole, made for court, with mid-sole cushioning. DO NOT use football studs. You slip and injure yourself.

Tights or long pants. Recommended with soft padding for protection in falls, especially on hard court.

Goalkeeper shirt. Traditional with long sleeve, also with shoulder and elbow padding available for futsal.

Knee pads. Many futsal goalkeepers use them due to frequent falls against the court.

Gloves. Different from football.

What gloves to choose for futsal

Two different priorities from football.

First. Very snug fit. Short distance shots demand maximum sensitivity and closing speed. Negative, Flash X or Speed cuts are the most recommended.

Second. Palm durability. The court is less abrasive than turf but also wears. You want a palm that lasts.

Recommended Elite Sport models for futsal.

  • Solo Black. N-Roll cut, Centum+ 4 mm palm, removable spines. Performance-price balance for competitive goalkeeper.
  • Combat. N-Roll cut with removable spines. Especially useful if you have had finger injury, frequent in futsal due to short distance.
  • Neo Line (Quartz, Quantum, Spin, Energy). Speed proprietary cut wrapping outer fingers 360 degrees. Excellent for reactivity.
  • If you want top tier, T1 with Negative cut offers the catalogue's maximum sensitivity.

The goalkeeper-player. The new variable

More and more teams play with goalkeeper-player as part of their system, not just in deficit moments. If your role includes this aspect, your gear changes slightly.

Shirt. Same as the team, not goalkeeper (when you play as field player).

Gloves. Yes, you wear them. Models with good control and distribution with feet (Neo Line, T1, Solo Black) are the most versatile.

Mentality. You are doing two roles. It is demanding. Communicate with your team when you are goalkeeper and when you are field player, especially in fast transitions.

Glove care in futsal

The court does not attack the latex like turf, but constant falls against cement or linoleum court leave marks on the palm. The good news is that a futsal glove lasts longer than a football one on turf, in general.

Follow the same basic rules: wash after every match, dry in shade, hydrate in dry climates.

The modern futsal goalkeeper

The level of world futsal continues to rise, especially in countries like Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Portugal and Iran. Futsal goalkeepers are increasingly more complete, more technical, better prepared.

If you are a futsal goalkeeper, you have a demanding and technical position that deserves to be recognized. And from Elite Sport, we recommend gloves designed for your game, not for that of your big-pitch colleagues.

REDEFINE YOUR GAME. For serious futsal, Solo Black or Combat are the safe bets. If you want the proprietary Speed cut, Neo Line.

  • Glove cuts
  • Fingersave goalkeeper gloves
